Thanks for reading and responding, Raegan. Those are great questions. I don’t have exhaustive answers, but here are a few thoughts:

  • Reducing anger starts by acknowledging and fully feeling anger. Bill left a really wonderful response about how to do that: https://medium.com/@billmccart/thank-you-for-this-excellent-article-25d17f75d680
  • Shaping anger for good is all about what you do with the anger. Anger itself is neither good nor evil. In fact, I’d say if it’s anything, it’s on the good side of things. It’s there to help us. Anger becomes damaging when we ignore it (it damages us and eventually will damage others) and when we misdirect it (releasing the energy thoughtlessly toward the nearest target).
  • Creative outlets can be a HUGE help in letting ourselves start feeling and listening to our anger. Painting, drawing, singing, dancing, writing, or other modes of expression make it easier for us to let the anger out in a ‘safe way’ — a way that’s not damaging to us or others. Once we let out some of that energy, it’s easier to think about the cause and come up with specific actions that might be needed to resolve a situation or set boundaries, etc.
