At one point in my life, I needed to choose between writing and music. I had a tiny bit of experience in each. I remember thinking about music and how it makes me feel (as a performer): joyful, energized, but also kind of stressed out. When I thought about writing, I realized this: it’s not that writing always makes me feel happy, or energized. I hate it to hell and back sometimes. But when I’m not writing, I am missing something essential. Writing for me is wound up in my identity, my need to self-express, and no matter what I can’t untangle it. Music: I love it as a hobby, a release, an outlet, a contrast. Writing: I need it like I need to breathe.
