Absolutely true. Authority figures and gatekeepers can absolutely create barriers and hold up standards that are often arbitrary and often enforced for no reason than to exert control over others. And I agree also with your point about the risks/repercussions of what is perceived as “lower quality” work: for those from minorities or other marginalized groups, every risk is greater. And the potential repercussions (for “daring to…” do what other creative people do) can be huge, devastating, long-lasting. Thanks for adding these points and insights to the conversation.
